White Sox on pace to break all-time loss record for one season

With the White Sox current 15-game losing streak, their record is now 27-82. They are now projected to have 122 losses this season. That would break the all-time record of 120 losses by the 1962 Mets. (I’m counting only teams since 1900. The 1899 Cleveland Spiders were 20-134)

The 2024 White Sox game results chart from baseball-reference is a complete sea of red losses.

I can’t quite figure out why the White Sox are losing historically bad.

You’d expect that their ERA+ would rank in the top ten worst all time. Nope, it’s actually only 389th worst ever. Three other teams this year have a worse ERA+

  • 76th: COL 82
  • 327th: TOR 89
  • 364th: SFG 90

By the way, I’m using rankings since 1901.

Ok, how about hitting? Maybe their hitting is really bad. The 2024 White Sox have the 22nd worst season for OPS+. Looks like it’s their hitting. Granted, it’s not top ten bad. But all-time for worst OPS+ is not going to get you many wins.
